Asphalt shingle is the most common roof in San Diego County for good reason: it is the best cost-to-lifespan ratio available, it suits almost every architectural style, and a quality architectural shingle handles our sun, marine air and Santa Ana winds well. The catch is that shingle is also the easiest roof to install badly, because most of what makes it last is hidden under the surface once the job is done.
We install shingle as a system, not as a surface. That means tearing off the old roof rather than laying over it, inspecting and repairing the decking, installing the correct underlayment, ice-and-water shield at the vulnerable details, proper valley and penetration flashing, and balanced ridge and soffit ventilation so the attic does not cook the shingle from underneath. Our Premier ShingleMaster status, held by less than 1 percent of US roofing contractors, is what lets us register the strongest CertainTeed system warranties on that assembly.

The assembly
What actually makes a shingle roof last
Sound decking
Tear-off exposes the deck so rot and delamination get repaired instead of covered up.
The right underlayment
The real secondary water barrier, with ice-and-water shield at the vulnerable details.
Flashed, not caulked
Valleys, walls and penetrations detailed in metal, because sealant has a five-year life.
Balanced ventilation
Ridge and soffit airflow, so trapped attic heat does not cook the shingle from below.

Asphalt Shingle Roofing: common questions

The cost of an asphalt shingle roof in San Diego moves with roof size, pitch, how many old layers come off, decking condition, the shingle tier (architectural versus designer), and whether your address needs a Class A fire assembly or coastal detailing. Use our online roof estimator for an instant, address-based estimate, then we confirm a fixed price after a free estimate.
A quality architectural shingle roof lasts 25 to 30 years in San Diego County. Inland heat and coastal salt air both shorten that, and poor attic ventilation shortens it more than either, because trapped heat ages shingle from the underside. Installation quality matters as much as the shingle itself, which is why we include balanced ventilation in every replacement scope.
It is sometimes permitted, but we do not recommend it and we generally will not do it. A layover hides whatever is wrong with the decking, adds weight, traps heat that shortens shingle life, and voids the manufacturer system warranties that are the main reason to hire a Premier ShingleMaster. Tear-off costs more up front and is the reason the roof lasts its full life.
For most homes, a laminated architectural shingle in a lighter color is the right call: it handles UV and heat better than a three-tab, carries a longer warranty, and reflects more heat than a dark color. If your address is in a Wildland-Urban Interface fire zone, the assembly must be Class A rated. Near the coast, the fasteners and flashing metal matter more than the shingle line itself.
Premier ShingleMaster is CertainTeed's highest residential credential and is held by less than 1 percent of US roofing contractors. Practically, it means the crew is certified on the exact system they are installing, and it unlocks the extended system warranties that cover workmanship and the whole assembly, not just the shingle. A manufacturer will not back an assembly installed by an uncertified contractor.
